Nachi Robotics to invest $12 million in Novi expansion

Nachi Robotics Systems Inc. is expanding in Novi with plans to invest $12 million and create 36 new jobs.

The robotics supplier has outgrown its base at 42775 W. Nine Mile Road and is planning to lease another space nearby at 46200 W. 12 Mile Rd., according to company spokesman Andrew Candela. Its current space is 58,000 square feet, and its new digs measure 66,000 square feet.

Nachi has been based in Novi since 1989. Its parent company, Nachi America Inc., is headquartered in Indiana. Its robotics arm supplies the auto industry and others with a platform of solutions, including spot welding, arc welding, sealing and machine tending.

Build-out of the new space began in June, Candela said in an email. Completion is targeted for the end of the year. Farmington Hills-based Dembs Development Inc. is the general contractor and Southfield-based Faudie Architecture is doing design.

The project received support from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. in the way of a $360,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant, according to a news release from the MEDC. The company is also being offered a 50 percent property tax abatement from the city of Novi, it said.

“Nachi’s continued investment in Novi is a vote of confidence in our future, and a source of support for other companies looking to grow and prosper here,” Novi Mayor Bob Gatt said in the release.

Robotics are on the rise in metro Detroit. Fanuc America Corp. plans to invest $51 million into a massive new high-tech robotics facility in Auburn Hills next to its North American headquarters. It received a $1 million incentives package from the state in support of creating 100 new jobs, the MEDC announced Thursday.
